Coast FIRE means you've saved enough that — if you never contribute another dollar — compound interest alone will grow your investments to your full FIRE number by traditional retirement age. Once you hit your Coast FIRE number, you only need to earn enough to cover living expenses.
No more aggressive saving. Work part-time, switch to a passion project, travel, or simply breathe easier.
Coast FIRE Number = Full FIRE Number ÷ (1 + return rate)^years. Full FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate.
At 7% annual growth, money doubles every ~10 years. If you're 30 and need $1M at 60, you only need ~$131K today.
Lean FIRE (frugal), Fat FIRE (luxury), Barista FIRE (part-time work), and Coast FIRE (let it ride) — all valid paths to FI.
From the Trinity Study — withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually has historically lasted 30+ years across nearly all market conditions.
Enter current savings, retirement age, expected return, and annual expenses. Instantly calculates your Coast FIRE number and progress.
This calculator uses nominal returns. For real returns, subtract inflation from your expected return (e.g. 7% − 2.5% = 4.5% real return).
We built this tool because we were frustrated by complex, paid retirement calculators. Everyone deserves free, clear, and accurate access to their financial independence number.
The Coast FIRE Calculator was created to democratize access to financial independence planning. We believe that the FIRE movement — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is not just for the wealthy. With the right information and tools, anyone can chart a path to financial freedom.
Our calculator gives you your personalized Coast FIRE number in seconds, with no account required, no ads, and no hidden fees. Ever.

Our calculator uses the standard Coast FIRE formula: Coast FIRE Number = (Annual Expenses ÷ SWR) ÷ (1 + Real Return)^Years. All calculations are done in your browser — your financial data never leaves your device.
We also apply an inflation adjustment so that your Full FIRE Number is expressed in future dollars, giving you a more accurate retirement target.
